RULES
SECTION 1 — TEAM STRUCTURE
1.1 Roster
Each team must have a minimum of 6 players and a maximum of 10 players on their active roster.
Rosters must include players eligible to compete in all match formats: mixed doubles, women's doubles, men's doubles, and singles.
Teams are responsible for maintaining a roster capable of fielding all required sets for each match.
1.2 Team Captains
Each team must have one designated Team Captain appointed at the beginning of each season.
The Team Captain is responsible for managing team operations, recruiting players, communicating with league administration, and making all in-match decisions including player selection for tiebreaker sets.
The Team Captain must be an active rostered player.
1.3 Team Names
Team names will be chosen from a list of premade team names.
Beginning in Season 2 and all subsequent seasons, team names will be assigned by league administration.
1.4 Player Eligibility
The league is open-skill and intended for amateur-level competition.
Any player who currently holds an active contract with a professional pickleball organization is ineligible to participate in the Showdown Pickleball League.
It is the responsibility of the Team Captain to ensure all rostered players meet eligibility requirements.
League administration reserves the right to review and rule on eligibility disputes.
SECTION 2 — SEASON FORMAT
2.1 Regular Season
Each team will play 10 matches during the regular season.
Matches are scheduled on weekends. Each team will either play a match or receive a bye week each weekend.
Bye weeks are scheduled by league administration to ensure fair distribution across the season.
2.2 Standings
Teams are ranked by total match wins throughout the regular season.
In the event of a tie in the standings, the following tiebreakers are applied in order:
1st Tiebreaker: Point differential (total points scored minus total points allowed across all sets played)
2nd Tiebreaker: Set differential (total sets won minus total sets lost across all matches)
3rd Tiebreaker: Head-to-head record between the tied teams
4th Tiebreaker: Coin flip administered by the league commissioner
2.3 Playoffs
At the conclusion of the regular season, the top 4 teams in the standings will advance to the playoffs.
Playoff bracket: 1st seed vs. 4th seed and 2nd seed vs. 3rd seed in the semifinals. The two winners advance to the championship match. The two losers play in the 3rd Place Match
Playoff matches follow the same format, rules, and scoring as regular season matches.
SECTION 3 — MATCH FORMAT
3.1 Match Structure
Each team match consists of the following sets, played in order:
Set 1: Mixed Doubles
Set 2: Mixed Doubles
Set 3: Women's Doubles
Set 4: Men's Doubles
Set 5 (Tiebreaker — if needed): Singles
The team that wins the most sets wins the match. A team must win 3 or more sets to win the match outright. If each team wins 2 sets across the first 4 sets, a tiebreaker singles set is played.
3.2 Home & Away
Each match designates one team as the Home Team and one team as the Visiting Team.
The Home Team is determined by current league standings — the higher-ranked team at the time of the match is designated the Home Team.
If the two teams are tied in the standings, a coin flip determines which team is the Home Team. The coin flip is conducted by the league commissioner or a designated official.
3.3 Court Sides
The Visiting Team chooses which side of the court they start on at the beginning of the match. This choice applies to Set 1.
At halftime of each set — when either team first reaches 11 points — both teams switch sides of the court.
At the start of each new set, teams begin on whichever side of the court they finished on at the end of the previous set. There is no re-selection of sides between sets.
3.4 Serve Order
The Home Team chooses whether they wish to serve first or receive first at the start of Set 1.
The team that starts serving alternates each set. If the Home Team serves first in Set 1, the Visiting Team serves first in Set 2, and so on throughout the match.
3.5 Lineup Reveal
Before each set, the Home Team must present their lineup to the Visiting Team first — declaring which players will compete in that set and their starting positions.
Once the Home Team has revealed their lineup, the Visiting Team then determines and declares their own lineup for that set.
Lineups are binding once declared. No changes may be made after both lineups have been submitted except in the case of injury (see Section 3.8).
3.6 Player Selection
Team Captains determine which players compete in each set.
A player may compete in more than one set across a match at the captain's discretion.
A player may not compete in both mixed doubles sets.
For the tiebreaker singles set, each team's captain selects one player from their roster to represent the team.
3.7 Player Positions
Once a player's starting position is declared for a set, that player must remain in that position for the entirety of that set. Players may not switch positions during a set on serve or at any other time.
A player who competes in multiple sets may occupy a different position in a different set. Position restrictions apply only within a single set.
3.8 Substitutions
No substitutions are permitted during a set except in the case of injury.
If a non-injury substitution is made during a set, the offending team immediately forfeits that set.
Injury substitutions must be made with a player of the same gender. A male player may not substitute into a women's doubles set, and a female player may not substitute into a men's doubles set.
If no eligible same-gender substitute is available following an injury, the set is forfeited by the team unable to field a legal replacement.
3.9 Timeouts
Each team is allowed one (1) timeout of 60 seconds per set.
Unused timeouts do not carry over between sets.
Timeouts may only be called by the Team Captain or an active player on the court during a dead ball.
3.10 Defaults and Forfeits
If a team is unable to field the required players for a set, that set is forfeited to the opposing team.
If a team cannot field players for the majority of sets in a match, the entire match is forfeited.
League administration must be notified in advance of any known forfeit situations.
SECTION 4 — SCORING
4.1 Scoring System
All sets use rally scoring. A point is awarded on every rally, regardless of which team served.
Sets are played to 21 points.
A team must win by 2 points. There is no point cap — play continues until one team leads by 2.
To win a set, the winning team must score the clinching point while they are serving. If the winning team reaches match point but is not serving, play continues until the winning team either scores on their own serve or the score is tied and they must extend.
Example: If Team A reaches 21 and Team B has 20, but Team B is currently serving, play continues. Team A must regain the serve and score to win the set.
SECTION 5 — RULES OF PLAY
5.1 Governing Rules
All play is governed by the most current official rulebook published by USA Pickleball (USAP).
Each team is required to own and maintain a copy of the current USA Pickleball rulebook. This copy must be available at all matches for reference in the event of a rule dispute.
Any rules not specifically addressed in this league document default to the current USA Pickleball rulebook.
5.2 Rule Disputes
In the event of a rule dispute during a match, the USA Pickleball rulebook is the first point of reference.
All rule disputes are escalated to the league commissioner for a final ruling.
The commissioner's ruling is final. No Team Captain or player has the authority to make an official ruling on a rule dispute.
SECTION 6 — FEES & UNIFORMS
6.1 Team Registration Fee
The cost to register a team in the Showdown Pickleball League is $500 per team per season.
The registration fee is due at the time of team registration and must be paid in full before a team is officially entered into the season schedule.
6.2 Player Uniforms
All rostered players are required to wear their official league jersey during every match. The official jersey is a shirt provided through the league.
The cost of official jerseys is the responsibility of each individual player. Jersey details and ordering information will be provided by league administration prior to the start of each season.
It is suggested — though not required — that all other items worn during a match, including hats, pants, and shorts, be in the team's designated color, black, or white. This is a recommendation to promote a unified team look and is not subject to penalty.
No player may wear any item on their body that is similar in color to the official league ball. This includes clothing, accessories, wristbands, headbands, or any other worn item.
The following enforcement rules apply to all uniform violations, including the missing jersey requirement and the ball color rule:
Team Captains are responsible for ensuring their players are in compliance with all uniform rules before and during play.
A substitution to resolve a uniform violation is only permitted before the first serve of a set. Once the set has begun, no substitution is allowed for this reason — the player must correct the violation or the set is forfeited.
The opposing team may bring a uniform violation to the attention of the offending team at any time before or during a set. If the violation is not identified until after the set has concluded, it shall have no effect on the outcome of that set.
At no time may play continue while a uniform violation is present.
6.3 Official League Ball
The official league ball will be announced by league administration prior to the start of the season.
The official league ball is required to be used during all live match play.
Teams are responsible for having the official league ball available and ready for play at each match.
SECTION 7 — CONDUCT & SPORTSMANSHIP
All players, captains, and team representatives are expected to conduct themselves with sportsmanship and respect at all times.
Unsportsmanlike conduct, verbal abuse, or behavior deemed detrimental to the league may result in penalties including point deductions, match forfeiture, suspension, or removal from the league at the discretion of the commissioner.
The league commissioner holds final authority on all conduct matters.
SECTION 8 — LEAGUE ADMINISTRATION
The Showdown Pickleball League is administered by the league commissioner.
The commissioner is responsible for scheduling, standings, rule enforcement, eligibility rulings, conduct decisions, and any other matters related to the operation of the league.
The commissioner's decisions on all league matters are final.
